bhazen Yes, this IS a Beatles forum.

I always hoped the Moody Blues would do an album called Elvi
    ...
  2. From what I understand the Canadian black vinyls are more common too.
  3. My pressing of 'Moody Blue' is an AFL1-2428. Black vinyl, boss sound, staggeringly deep bass.

  4. Thanks. I always thought the original cat. number black LPs came out after he died. All of the one's I saw were blue but that was a very limited sampling.
  5.
  6. I really like the vocals on 'It's Easy For You'...'You may not mind that it's over, but I've a different point of view, even though I'm shattered, it's easy for you...'...great performance!

Chris C Music was my first love and it will be my last!

My parents never "collected" records, but I seem to remember them having a SEALED copy of the "Moody Blue" LP, which had a sticker on the cover that says "The Blue Album". I still have that SEALED copy somewhere here with me. I also have an open copy of the same LP, although I never play it. When I'm in the mood for this late era Elvis, I'll grab my original promo 45's of "Way Down" and "Moody Blue", which is about as much as I personally care for, from the "Moody Blue" album.

  8. I was working at WCBM-AM in Baltimore during that time. I remember getting the blue vinyl version when it was first released. I couldn't remember when they switched to black vinyl - but I know that we gave a TON of them away. (Elvis was hugely popular with our listeners, so we always had giveaways for his albums.) Alas, I too figured that the blue vinyl would be collectible & was just a little irked when then went back to it after he died.

  9. :agree: I was just about to post this.
IIRC, it was originally released on black vinyl. But Elvis died shortly after the initial release. So it was decided to use blue vinyl as a tribute. Hence only the early first run pressings are black. All subsequent are blue, and they probably number in the millions.
  10. Yep! And I like the bridge even better:

I had a wife and I had children
    I threw them all away
And now you tell me, you dare to tell me
I should go back to them
What do you think I should say

  11. According to the Alana Nash book, The Memphis Mafia, Lamar Fike (or Marty Lacker) say that in the last year Presley had Sherill Neilson do the high notes in concert. Please don't tell me that that's not Elvis hitting that doozy in How Great Thou Art...
  12. I like everything on the album. It seemed to me that Elvis sang about Priscilla a lot towards the end. The line in "It's Easy For You"- "You don't have to face the music, you don't have to face the crowd" was something he could have actually said to her.
  13. In Roy Carr and Mick Farren's Elvis book they say RCA had a lot of trouble getting the right shade of blue and experimented on 'in house' copies of the Moody Blue single. I'm pretty sure only 5 are in the hands of collectors and most of them are a purply colour.
  14. One of my favorite moments in all music. Especially the striped down version on The Jungle Room Sessions.
  15. Me too. And it has a semi-decent sleeve too, unlike most of Elvis' 70s LPs with all those endless shots of him close up in white "cabaret" costumes.
  16. If this doesn't summarize the total pathetic, careless joke he had turned himself into by 1977...

and I like Way Down and Moody Blue (the song) but geez...

  17. I agree that the '76 Graceland sessions would have made one really strong LP, just like the '73 Stax sessions would have made one stunning LP. "Little Darlin'" should never have seen the light of day, EVER. In fact, none of the live tracks were anything special.

To me, Moody Blue was just another in a long line of horribly botched RCA patchwork jobs (albeit with a slightly better cover).

  18. That sums it up nicely to me.
  19. Yes indeed. Anyone who likes the Moody Blue and Elvis Presley Blvd albums should check out The Jungle Room sessions on FTD which is all live takes before the strings, horns, and backing singers were added.

Yes, I know they are pricey, but still cheaper than your average DCC. I know I got my money's worth

  20. 3 pages on Moody Blues in less than 24 hours? What are you guys smoking?
  21. At least there's no scantily clad women to upset you.
  22. Oh, that's Elvis on How Great Thou Art, alright. I believe what Lacker and Fike are referring to is the high falsetto note at the end of 'Unchained Melody', there are a couple of shows where i guess Elvis was tired and had Sherill fill in. I have heard a couple of tapes of concerts where you can hear this, and the transition is none too subtle. It might have fooled people live, but on tape is something else entirely. In fact, the first time I heard it, I didn't even realize what it was. I just thought someone had inexplicably turned Sherill's mike up really loud!
  23. "Shoot the dog..shoot the yellow dog!"
  24. Thanks. Marty or Lamar (I forget who, exactly) did mention Unchained Melody as one of the tunes, but since he didn't list them all I wasn't sure.
Do you think it was just due to the fact he was tired, or had his vocal range suffered permanent damage? Then again, I guess How Great Thou Art answers that question.
